THE EX FACTOR GIVEN NAME BBC PODCAST Answer key

Suggested answers.

1.- What did the professor call his daughter when she was born and why?
He called her “E” because she was born two months premature , they had narrowed down the selections to a bunch of E-names and they couldn´t decide and that´s why her parents called her "E".

2.- Will she change her name? Why, Why not?
No she won´t. She´s got used to it. It´s part of her.

3.- How do parents choose their children´s names according to the professor? They want to signal who they are, if conventional they choose a traditional name or if they want to show themselves as creative, they choose an unusual, weird name. They pore over  baby name books. Also the names should sound right with the family name, or they might honour a favourite grandparent.

They´re all examples of first names in Africa.

5.- In which country are there restrictions to choosing names? What ´s the testimony of a woman and her daughter about? In Iceland. She wanted to give her daughter a name not on the list as an approved name. She was named "Blythe" but she wasn´t allowed to use it. She was called  "girl" for 15 years after losing her real name..  She went to court to fight for the right to choose freely her daughter´s name and get it back. Finally she got her name back.
